A top multi-national company had four regional sales teams working in the
UK. They met on a monthly basis but there was very little constructive dialogue during these meetings. This resulted in a number of misunderstandings, manifested as conflict between team members who did not then work together to achieve team objectives and targets. This directly affected the profitability of the company.

Our management facilitators worked closely with the customer to identify the objective of the training; this was defined as:

"To improve team working and communication between the 4 UK sales teams"

Exercises were then designed to ensure the maximum effect in achieving this objective and thereby maximum impact in the workplace. In partnership with the National Sports Council, our facilitators designed a two-day event.

There was an in depth discussion on what made high quality teams work well together before moving onto a number of indoor and outdoor activities to put these theories into practice. The activities included an exercise where the 4 regional teams worked separately but it culminated in tasks that required all the teams to co-operate in order that each team could complete their own specific goal. White water rafting was also used to give the attendees a real sense of achievement and to practice team working in a pressure situation.

Throughout the activities, the parallels to situations in the workplace
where highlighted and the course culminated in a detailed action plan that
was to be applied by the sales teams on their return.

After 6 months the effectiveness of the event was evaluated. There was an
obvious increase in the amount, and quality, of communications between team members both within and outside the monthly meetings.

Time was also scheduled specifically for team working activities and the
teams reported an increase in their targeted number of visits to their retail outlets. As a result a number of those who attended the training reported a relative increase in sales of 5%. On sales of £5,000,000 per annum this represented an increase of £250,000.
